Academic Pressure

Is it normal to worry about future career choices at a young age? The answer is yes, many students enquire what they are going to go forward and achieve after education, but is it a topic that needs to be brought to light? Statistics show that 50% of college students stress about future job prospects, highlighting anxiety related to career uncertainty. Personally, I think it is good to have an open mind regarding your futures, as it is not necessary to turn to panic.

However, career planning can be effective, in most cases… students find out their ideal careers after their education due to them finding new interests, hobbies, and weaknesses. During our journey through education, we will ALWAYS be asked “what do you want to do in the future?” and the answer, for many, will be different every time as our enjoyments, hobbies and interests will always be changing. Moreover, research states that only 27.3% of students with an undergraduate degree go and work in a job directly related to their academic major- resulting in 72.7% do not go and work a job related to their degree.

Concluding that it’s always effective to have an idea on what career path you would aspire to take, but it’s not a necessity worth worrying about on top of our academic work and revision. At college, we have a careers team which helps to provide support for those who are unsure or feel stressed about options moving forward. For example, students can book a careers meeting via email (careers@kedst.ac.uk) at the careers office in Stourbridge town to speak about concerns, career path, and ideas, etc.
